Chapelle des Cordeliers in Sarrebourg

The Chapelle des Cordeliers in Sarrebourg is a former chapel of the Franciscan order in the Romanesque style .

history

In 1256 Franciscans settled in Sarrebourg, who in France also called themselves Cordeliers until the French Revolution . In the same year, construction work began on a convent , which was completed on one side by a previously existing St. Mary's Church from the 12th century.

In the 16th and 17th centuries the chapel was rebuilt and given a Gothic look.

In 1792 the last mass was celebrated in the chapel . The convent was dissolved and the convent buildings were used as barracks from then on. The chapel itself was converted into a stables .

After the annexation of Lorraine by the German Empire in 1870, the chapel was used again as a church building for the Protestant soldiers of the German Empire.

In 1927 the Société d'histoire et d'archéologie de Sarrebourg found their accommodation in the chapel. In 1970 it was decided to demolish the dilapidated building adjoining the chapel. The chapel was then restored. Due to the demolition, the chapel was open to the east. Marc Chagall was commissioned to close the opening with a stained glass window . In 1976, the monumental window, which has peace as a motif, and other side windows were completed. The window of peace measures 12 meters in height, 7.5 meters in width and weighs 900 kilograms. The stained glass was implemented by Chagall in collaboration with Charles Marq .

Today the chapel serves as a museum for the Chagall windows and is part of the Marc Chagall museum course of the city of Sarrebourg.

On December 18, 1992, the chapel was added to the French list of historical monuments .
