Charles Callahan Perkins (born March 1, 1823 in Boston , † August 25, 1886 in Windsor (Vermont) ) was an American artist and author.

life and work

Charles Callahan Perkins attended Harvard College and graduated there in 1843. Then he continued his education in Europe. He studied art in Rome and in 1846 in Paris , where he took lessons from the Dutch-French painter Ary Scheffer . While traveling in Italy, he was primarily concerned with researching Italian sculpture of the 15th and 16th centuries and, as the fruit of this research, published the works Tuscan Sculptors (2 vols., London 1864) and Italian Sculptors (London 1868). He also studied music and etching in Europe . Returning to his hometown, he supported the founding of the Museum of Fine Arts , became its honorary director and played a leading role in the artistic circles of Boston for many years as a creator and author. From 1869 to 1879 he was president of the Boston Art Club , from 1870 to 1883 a member of the city school board, and from 1875 to 1886 president of the Handel and Haydn Society . He was also a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society and had been a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1870 .
