Live and act

Charles Filiger's father, Martin Filiger, worked as a draftsman in a wallpaper factory in Thann. Filiger began his studies at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris and continued it at the Académie Colarossi . He exhibited his works in 1889 and 1890 in the Salon des Independants . In 1888 he joined the Pont-Aven school . He settled in Clohars-Carnoët , where Paul Gauguin , Meijer de Haan and from 1890 Paul Sérusier lived in the Le Pouldu district . The artists were fans of open air painting . With the departure of Gauguin in 1895, the group of artists fell apart.

From 1892 Filiger received a monthly pension of one hundred and fifty francs from the patron Count Antoine de La Rochefoucauld. The patron was able to select Filiger's best works for his collection. The remaining works were exhibited in the Paris salons Le Barc de Boutteville and Salon de la Rose-Croix . Filiger experienced a mental crisis alone. His patron withdrew his support.

From 1895 to 1900 he lived in misery in the hamlet of Kersulé near Le Pouldu . He became addicted to alcohol and ether. From 1901 to 1902 he lived in Rochefort-en-Terre and in 1903 he went to Switzerland to visit his family, then came to the hamlet of Kersellec Pouldu, where he lived from 1904 to 1905. In 1905 he was hospitalized in Malestroit and then spent four years in a small inn in Gouarec .

He lived in Arzano from 1911 . His homosexuality put him in a difficult position. He broke off relationships with friends and family. In 1914 he moved into a pension with Mr and Mrs Le Guellec in the Hotel du Menhir in Trégunc . His innkeepers signed a maintenance contract with Charles Filiger's sister. In 1918 he moved to Plougastel-Daoulas . He spent ten years there. One day he was found on the street with his wrists slashed and he was taken to Brest hospital, where he died a few days later.
