Charles Freeman Lee

Charles Freeman Lee , recordings under Freeman Lee, (born August 13, 1927 in New York City , † June 15, 1997 in Richmond (Virginia) ) was an American jazz trumpeter and pianist (also vocals).

Lee studied biology at Wilberforce Academy in Ohio and played there with the Wilberforce Collegians. In 1950 he played the piano with Snooky Young and in 1951 trumpet (and piano) with Candy Johnson and in 1952 with Sonny Stitt and Eddie Vinson . In 1953 he played with Joe Holiday and worked as a freelancer in New York in 1954/55. In 1956 he played with James Moody , then spent a year in Ohio and then back in New York.

He recorded with Frank Foster (and the Elmo Hope Quintet, Blue Note, as well as on Prestige), Babs Gonzales (Voila, Hope Records 1958). Tom Lord recorded 5 recording sessions from 1952 to 1958.

After his career as a jazz trumpeter, he was a teacher in Michigan City, Indiana . He had a bachelor's degree in biology from Central State College.
