Charles Gottweiss (born August 20, 1887 in Strasbourg , German Empire ; died March 20, 1976 in Strasbourg) was a Franco-German artist and sculptor .
life and work
Charles was born as the only son of Carl Otto Hugo Gottweiss and Marie-Jeanne Harter. The artist's parents were in the timber trade. The company was successful and had two houses in Strasbourg. After the First World War , the houses were confiscated and sold. The family found refuge with relatives in Kœnigshoffen . The painter himself moved into an apartment in Strasbourg and owned a studio on the canal in the “Little France” district. Gottweiss became a student of Lothar von Seebach . Emile Schneider and Edward Hirth taught him painting, Paul Schultz taught him sculpture. The pioneers of Cubism , especially Paul Cézanne , Georges Braque , Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris , laid the foundation stone over the years and inspired Charles. Like many Cubist artists, Gottweiss preferred still life and painted hundreds of works. In his style, he always made sure to combine architecture and abundance of form. At the age of 73 he took part in group exhibitions in Saverne and the Orangery in Strasbourg. Gottweiss spent his last years in Marlenheim , where he died in 1976.
