Charles Nepveu (* 5. October 1791 in Zeist , Utrecht Province , † 6. October 1871 in Amersfoort , Utrecht Province) was a Dutch lieutenant general and politician , among others 1848-1867 Chief of Staff, and from March to May 1848 Minister of War was . In 1849 he was raised to the nobility as a baron and appointed Minister of State in 1871 .

Life

Charles Nepveu, whose ancestors came from France , was in the Kingdom of Holland Page at the court of King Lodewijk Napoleon between 1806 and 1810 and then began a career as an officer . He took part in the Russian campaign in 1812 and in 1815 became an officer in the army of the Kingdom of the United Netherlands . He was adjutant to Jean Victor de Constant Rebecque during the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815 . This was followed by various assignments as an officer in the general staff and in August 1830 accompanied de Constant Rebecque on a secret mission in London , in which he was concerned with measures against the spread of the July Revolution in Paris . In August 1831 he was entrusted with the management of the headquarters of the field army during the ten-day campaign (Tiendaagse Veldtocht) against Belgium . He was later from October 8, 1840 until his death on October 6, 1871 adjutant in the extraordinary service of Kings Wilhelm II and Wilhelm III. who had been King of the Netherlands since 1849. In 1841 he was promoted to major general (Generaal-majoor) .

On March 25, 1848, Nepveu took over the office of Minister of War (Minister van Oorlog) in the Schimmelpenninck cabinet . However, he resigned from his ministerial office on May 17, 1848, together with Prime Minister Gerrit Schimmelpenninck , after he had previously stood as the only member of the cabinet at Schimmelpenninck's side during the discussions about the reform of the constitution of the Netherlands (Grondwetsherziening van 1848) . He was also entrusted with the affairs of the General Staff between March 25 and May 1848 and then acted as Chief of the General Staff (Chef van de Generale Staf) from May 1848 to December 7, 1867 as well as Chairman of the Defense Committee (Comité van Defensie) . Furthermore, he was an extraordinary member of the Second Chamber of the States General (Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal) from September 18 to October 8, 1848 , where he rejected the liberal constitutional reform as a representative of the province of Utrecht .

Charles Nepveu was raised as a baron to the nobility on July 27, 1849 and was promoted to lieutenant general (Luitenant-generaal) in 1852 . As such, he was between 1852 and 1867 also chairman of the Special Commission for Military Training (Speciale Commissie over het Militair Onderwijs) . On 7 December 1867 he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State (Minister van State) awarded.
