Charles Noel, 1st Earl of Gainsborough (born Edwardes ; October 2, 1781 , † June 10, 1866 ), was a British peer and politician of the Whigs .

Life

origin

He was born Charles Edwardes and was the eldest son of Gerard Edwardes and his wife Diana Middleton . His father inherited the fortune of his maternal uncle Henry Noel, 6th Earl of Gainsborough (1743–1798) in 1798 and changed the family name from "Edwardes" to "Noel" on this occasion with a royal license from May 5, 1798. At the death of his maternal grandfather, Admiral Charles Middleton, 1st Baron Barham , due to special inheritance regulations, his mother inherited his title as 2nd Baroness Barham and his father his subordinate title as 2nd Baronet , of the Navy.

Member of the House of Commons and House of Lords

On May 19, 1808, Noel was elected Knight of the Shire for Rutland in the British House of Commons . He held this mandate until December 31, 1814 and was a member of the Whigs' parliament .

When his mother died on April 12, 1823, he inherited her title of nobility as 3rd Baron Barham. This made him a member of the House of Lords for life . When his father died on February 25, 1838, he also inherited the title of 3rd Baronet, of the Navy. On August 16, 1841, he was also awarded the title Earl of Gainsborough , Viscount Campden , and Baron Noel , of Ridlington.

Marriages and offspring

Noel has been married four times and has seven children. His first marriage was on July 1, 1809, Elizabeth Welman, who died on December 1, 1811 without any children.

He then married Elizabeth Gray, daughter of Sir George Gray, 1st Baronet, on May 13, 1817, the second marriage . From this marriage his eldest son Charles George Noel emerged, who inherited his title as 2nd Earl of Gainsborough on his death. But his second wife died on September 20, 1818 in the postpartum period , less than two weeks after the birth of that son on 5 September 1818th

On June 29, 1820, Noel was third married to Arabella Hamlyn-Williams, daughter of former House of Commons Sir James Hamlyn-Williams, 2nd Baronet . From this marriage two daughters and two sons were born. The eldest daughter, Mary Arabella Louisa Noel, was married to Sir Andrew Agnew, 8th Baronet , who had been a member of the House of Commons for several years, and had 13 children with him. The second son Gerard Noel was from 1847 to 1883 Member of the House of Commons for Rutland and served between 1876 and 1880 as Minister of Public Works (First Commissioner of Works) . The third son, Henry Lewis Noel, was captain of the 68th (Durham) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) and, in 1863, High Sheriff of Rutland. The second daughter Catherine Hamilton Noel was married to James Carnegie, 9th Earl of Southesk , but died in 1855 at the age of 25.

Most recently Baron married on July 25, 1833, fourth marriage to Lady Frances Jocelyn, daughter of Robert Jocelyn, 3rd Earl of Roden . From this marriage came another daughter and another son. The daughter, Victoria Noel, was married to the House of Commons Sir Thomas Buxton, 3rd Baronet , who was Governor of South Australia from 1895 to 1899 . His youngest son was the poet and essayist Roden Noel .
