Charles Patrick John Coghlan
Sir Charles Patrick John Coghlan (born June 24, 1863 in King William's Town , Cape Colony , † August 28, 1927 in Salisbury, Rhodesia , today Harare , Zimbabwe ) was the first Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia . He held the office from October 1, 1923 until his death on August 28, 1927.
Coghlan came to Rhodesia in 1900 and practiced as a lawyer in Bulawayo . He supported the renewal of the British South Africa Society and worked against unification with Northern Rhodesia or the South African Union . In 1921, Coghlan was the leader of a delegation sent to London to form a government . In 1922, Southern Rhodesia became a self-governing British settlement colony. A special honor Coghlan was bestowed on the fact that he was buried near the grave of Cecil Rhodes in the Matopo Mountains .
