Charles Paulus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles Paulus (born May 17, 1866 in Hagenau , † after 1921 probably in or near Berlin) was a German cameraman , a pioneer from the early days of German cinematography.

Live and act

The son of a gas works worker was born in Hagenau , Alsace in 1866 . He later lived in Stettin , Domstrasse 21. In 1889, Auguste Marie married Martha Göbel in Berlin . Since he took over the technical management of the Rex studio of the film pioneer Alfred Duskes at Sellerstraße 35 in Berlin-Wedding in 1905 , he was, alongside Guido Seeber and Georg Furkel , one of the central cameramen in German film before the First World War . Paulus quickly made himself with the camera work to early film amusements from the hand of Heinrich Bolten-Baeckers such as The Captain of Koepenick, Klebolin sticks everything and Don Juan marries a name. With the Komet-Film-Compagnie Paulus & Unger, Charles Paulus and a partner founded his own small Berlin production company as early as 1911, for which he occasionally (1911/12) directed films himself.

During the First World War, Charles Paulus remained largely inactive as a cameraman and only produced several films in 1915. At the end of the war in 1918, Paulus resumed his work as a cameraman and initially photographed mainly the minor works of the novice film director EA Dupont , including various detective films with Max Landa . Paulus remained in business until 1922, but in recent years he has only photographed and produced completely insignificant entertainment productions, as a cameraman mostly dramas and sensation-oriented adventure stories, as a producer several short film fun plays and short documentaries. In 1922 his career as a cameraman and producer ended abruptly, and Charles Paulus may have died that year or immediately afterwards. Since his name no longer appears in the index of the reference book Universal-Filmlexikon from 1932, Charles Paulus is likely to have died before 1932.
