Charles Philipon (born April 19, 1800 in Lyon , † January 25, 1861 in Paris ) was a French caricaturist, graphic artist and journalist. Among other things, he was editor of the satirical magazines La Caricature and Le Charivari .

Life

From 1824 he worked as a lithographer and caricaturist in Paris. In 1829 he founded a small print shop with his brother-in-law Gabriel Aubert. Philipon also contributed to La Silhouette magazine . This appeared from December 24, 1829 to January 2, 1831 and positioned itself as a moderately liberal, richly illustrated publication for middle-class readers. It became the model for numerous similar publications. An unsigned caricature by Philipons of King Charles X in the April 1, 1830 edition, which was overlooked by the censors , led to a scandal and the conviction of the editor in charge. As a result, the magazine liked to hide political content behind seemingly harmless depictions, such as animal scenes by JJ Grandville ( Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard ).

With increasing business success, Philipon sacrificed his own artistic activity for a career as an entrepreneur. Among other things, he directed the satirical magazines La Caricature and Le Charivari and founded Le Journal amusant . Philipon's magazines employed outstanding artists such as Grandville, Honoré Daumier , Paul Gavarni , Traviès and Benjamin Roubaud .

After 1835, Philipon's magazines increasingly turned from political satire to social. Characteristic types of French society were portrayed and exposed in an entertaining way. At Philipon's suggestion, Daumier created the type of "commercial agent Robert Macaire".
