Charlie Perry (musician)
Charlie Perry (born 1924 in New York City , † July 14, 1998 in Middle Island , New York) was an American jazz musician ( drums , arrangement ) and music teacher.
Live and act
Perry played in the Nick Jerret Orchestra in 1942 before he was called up for military service; 1945 with the Manor All Stars (a studio band with ao with Turk Van Lake and Kai Winding ). In the post-war years he worked in the bands of Benny Goodman , Jimmy Dorsey , Stan Kenton , Alvino Rey and Buddy Morrow . He also recorded with Buddy Stewart , Dave Lambert , Allen Eager , Stan Getz , Herb Lance , Al Haig and George Wallington during this time . Around 1950 he played Bud Powell and Miles Davis . In the 1950s he was involved in recording sessions a. a. by John LaPorta , Teddi King and most recently at Mal Waldron around 1961 . In the field of jazz he was involved in 38 recording sessions between 1944 and 1961.
Perry, who lived in Long Island, was primarily active as a drum teacher and percussion historian in later years; His students include a. Peter Erskine and Mickey Roker . With Jack DeJohnette he wrote the textbook the Art of Modern Jazz Drumming (1984).
