Charlotte von Graffenried

Charlotte von Graffenried (born April 9, 1930 in Boston , † 2013 in Bern ) was a Swiss ethnologist .

Life

Graffenried was the daughter of Alexander von Muralt . She married Charles von Graffenried , studied ethnology , prehistory and religious studies , after their separation did field research in the Mandara Mountains and did her doctorate . In the 1950s or 1960s she compiled the texts for the catalog of an exhibition of Algerian rock paintings initiated by René Gardi and Hans-Georg Bandi in the Kunsthalle Bern . In the 1970s she conducted "intensive ethnological field research"; 1978-79 she spent 15 months with the Gemjek and Zulgo in the Mandara Mountains. She then collected money for the zebu and plow project for the "construction of a school house in Mokolo ". From 1984 to 1992 she worked at the Historisches Museum Bern ; the last exhibition she organized was devoted to gold weights from Ghana . From 1984 to 1990 she was President of the Swiss Africa Society . She spent her last years in Elfenau in Bern .
