Chatfield Hollow State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of ​​the township of Killingworth . In the park there are Indian caves and historical places such as a replica of a water wheel and a covered bridge. The Oak Lodge Nature Center is open seasonally and provides information and tours of the park. The CT-80 (North Branford Road) separates the park from Forster Pond State Park .

geology

The bedrock emerges at various points in the park. These outcrops consist of so-called Monson gneiss , a type of granite from the subduction zone of the Iapetus shelf. The Iapetus Ocean also pushed in after the formation of the granite and transformed the plutonite into today's gneiss when Avalonia collided with the North American plate. Later the overlying layers eroded and exposed the rock.

Monson gneiss is a medium to coarse-grained rock, light in color and composed primarily of plagioclase , quartz and biotite . Garnate , epidote or magnetite are found in some places . The valley in which Chatfield Hollow is located is a glacial valley, which can be recognized by the steep slopes and the frequently occurring "erratics" . These blocks of stone are mostly made up of Monson gneiss, but rocks from far away areas also occur.

Waters

The Pond Meadow Brook flows into the park area from the north, forms the Chatfield Hollow Pond together with other rivulets and then flows further south to the Hammonasset River as Chatfield Hollow Brook .

Freetime activities

hike

There are approximately 20 miles of hiking trails in the park that also continue in an adjacent stretch of the Cockaponset State Forest . Among other things , the Chatfield Trail , one of the blue-blazed trails, is part of the system and there are some challenging routes. In addition, the 250 m (825 ft) long Paul F. Wildermann Boardwalk offers the opportunity to explore a moor.

Mountain biking

The mountain bike routes are some of the most technically demanding routes in the state. The Lookout Trail and the Pond Trail , a branch of the Deep Woods Trail, are particularly popular .

Climb

Various steep walls and cliffs along Route 81 make the park a popular destination for climbers.

fishing

Chatfield Hollow State Park is one of Connecticut's eleven Trout Parks . It is regularly stocked with fish by the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection. The best fishing time is between opening day and memorial day . The ponds and streams are easily accessible for young anglers.
