Dart Island State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the community of Middletown . The area is not developed and not marked and can only be reached by boat. In 1918 Russell Dart donated an acre of land to the State of Connecticut. The 15th state park was born. In 1924, Dart Island State Park was the smallest state park in the United States . Initially, the area was increased to 0.8  hectares (1932, Connecticut Register and Manual ), but remained at this level for the next 80 years. In the 2012 edition of the Connecticut Register and Manual , the enlarged area of 7.7 hectares, today's area, appeared for the first time.

history

Dart Island State Park is a sandbar in the Connecticut River , a few hundred yards north of Hurd State Park . The sandbar is forested with "typical river trees such as willow, poplar and red maple." The sandbar was formerly of bluefish used -Fischern, who established a shelter and expounded their fishing. The hickory shad (Alosa mediocris) is known for making great annual migrations up the Connecticut River. The first acre of land was donated by Russell Dart in 1918. This made it Connecticut's 15th state park, after Bolton Notch State Park and Macedonia Brook State Park, and the smallest state park in the United States. In 1934, the park was on the State Register and Manual when the parks were first listed grown an acre.

Middletown's Harbor Management Plan states that Dart Island is a state park in name only. The Department of Environmental Protection does not provide for any development or use. However, Dart Island State Park has already been used by the Connecticut River Raft Race Inc. as a route point for the Connecticut River Raft Race , a charity event. One of the routes led from the Arrigoni Bridge to Dart Island State Park.

Freetime activities

Because of its remoteness, there are hardly any recommendations. Recreational activities include fishing, bird watching and boating. The 1966 Connecticut River Guide reported that there were good camping spots. The A to Z of CT State Parks only briefly describes the park, noting that there are no boat ramps within reach. The closest boat ramp is on Oaklum Dock Road. During the 2012 review it was mentioned that "with the help of mosquito nets, sunbathing and barbecuing on the sandbank on the edge of the park is possible ... on a not particularly interesting and bushy-looking island"
