As a young man, Yorton narrowly escaped death in 1958. He sustained serious injuries to his left eye, left forearm, left elbow, hip and both thighs in a car accident. In addition, the fractures on his right leg were so serious that the doctors advised on an amputation . However, after several operations, he was implanted with a stabilizing metal plate around his left femur and a metal rod in his right leg . Due to several consequential injuries from falls, he was ultimately dependent on a wheelchair for six months .

During his hospital stay, Yorton began to exercise with dumbbells for the first time . Until then, he had never been interested in weight training . With the permission of his attending physician, he finally began to exercise regularly in order to regain a healthy body weight. Due to the stress of the treatment, he had lost a considerable amount of rudimentary muscle strength . After he was released from the hospital, Yorton continued his training and expanded it to the point where he was able to compete in a bodybuilding competition for the first time in 1960 .

Yorton celebrated his first international success in 1966 when he became Mister America (IFBB). In the same year Yorton also won the competition for the Mister Universe (NABBA) for amateurs, in which he was able to defeat Arnold Schwarzenegger. Along with Frank Zane and Sergio Oliva, he is one of the only bodybuilders who has been granted this. In 1975 he also succeeded in gaining the title Pro Universe (NABBA).

In addition to his career as a bodybuilder, he took part in a few films , which is why the amateur association AAU banned him from further bodybuilding competitions. However, Yorten is still an active bodybuilder today and occasionally appears at sporting events, mostly for charitable purposes. During his active time he also ran a gym and organized several events on bodybuilding without the use of steroids . Due to his longstanding commitment to this practice, he is still considered the founder of natural bodybuilding today .
