Chetan Eknath Chitnis

Chetan Eknath Chitnis (born April 3, 1961 ) is an Indian scientist in the field of malaria research . He heads the Malaria Parasite Biology and Vaccines Unit at the Pasteur Institute in Paris .

education

Chetan Chitnis studied both at the Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai ( Master of Science in Physics 1983) and at Rice University in Houston ( Master of Arts in Physics 1985). In 1991 he received his doctorate of philosophy (PhD) from the University of California, Berkeley . After receiving his doctorate , he worked from 1991 to 1995 as a Fogarty International Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda (Maryland) . In 1996 he was appointed Principal Investigator in the Malaria Working Group of the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in New Delhi . In 2014 he was appointed the new head of the Malaria Parasite Biology and Vaccines Unit working group at the Pasteur Institute in Paris .

Chetan Chitnis has published over 100 international scientific articles and holds three patents on malaria vaccinations.

Research priorities

Chetan Chitnis and his working group are researching the molecular and cell biological aspects of the host-parasite interaction of the malaria parasite Plasmodium spp. The working group is particularly concerned with the molecular signal processes during the penetration and exit of the malaria pathogens from the red blood cells . Another focus of the work is the development of a malaria vaccine . The publications by Chitnis and his group have contributed to a better understanding of the development of antibodies in Plasmodium spp. and the interaction of Plasmodium binding proteins and the Duffy antigen of erythrocytes .
