In addition, various special and event trips are undertaken. Certain sections can be used with the free ride for the severely disabled.

The Chiemsee-Schifffahrt fleet consists of a total of 15 ships of various sizes up to the MS Edeltraud for a maximum of 1007 passengers. The former paddle wheel steamer Ludwig Fessler, built in 1926, is considered the most beautiful ship in the fleet . This was converted to diesel-electric drive in 1973 and renovated in 1995. It is used as a wheel motor ship (RMS) and is powered by two MAN diesel engines with 276 HP each. The original steam engine of Ludwig Fessler von Maffei with the number 576, the last ship steam engine from Maffei, was acquired by the Swiss association Trivapor in 2004 after various changes of ownership and has been in operation again on the restored paddle steamer Neuchâtel on Lake Neuchâtel since the end of 2013 .

Chiemsee Railway

The Chiemsee-Bahn , built in 1887 under Ludwig Feßler and Georg Krauss , between the Prien train station and the Stock district with the ship landing stage there, has also been operated by Chiemsee-Schifffahrt Ludwig Feßler KG since 1965 .

history

Shipping on the Chiemsee goes back to the master carpenter Wolfgang Schmid from Grassau , who in 1843 received a license to operate steam shipping on the Chiemsee with the obligation to adhere to the timetable, and on May 5, 1845 with the operation of a paddle-wheel steamship he made of wood started. However, due to technical problems and the high operating costs, steamboat traffic was soon abandoned.

The Munich coppersmith Joseph Feßler, who manufactured the boiler system for the steamship built by Wolfgang Schmid, received the permit to continue steam shipping on the Chiemsee in 1848, took over the steamship from Wolfgang Schmid, expanded the steam engine and started on July 14, 1849 Traffic. Ten years later, an iron ship built by the Maffei works was used, which was equipped with the steam engine from the old ship.

The company, meanwhile taken over by the son Ludwig Feßler, was not very successful at first, however, the railway line Munich-Salzburg, opened in 1860, now transported the guests past the Chiemsee and the original business idea to cover part of the uncomfortable journey with the stagecoach on this route by ship , collapsed. Tourism in the form we know today did not yet exist and the Chiemsee painters who are so famous today usually had no money for the crossing. Ludwig Feßler had to look around for a new business idea and found what he was looking for. He fastened his paddle steamer in the harbor basin in Prien / Stock, dismantled the paddle wheels and operated a saw frame with the steam engine. To do this, he had wood brought to him by raft from Herreninsel and other places on the bank.

It was not until King Ludwig II began building his Herrenchiemsee Palace in 1878 that Ludwig Feßler was able to earn some money with shipping again by transporting materials. In addition, a tugboat built by Maffei was used for the extensive transport of materials. Only when the unfinished castle was opened to the public by Prince Regent Luitpold after the death of Ludwig II in 1886 did a larger flow of visitors begin. In order to do justice to this, Ludwig Feßler used the paddle steamer Luitpold for up to 500 passengers from 1887 , which remained in use until 1969. In the same year he put the Chiemsee Railway, built together with Kommerzienrat Georg Krauss, into operation.

In September 1926, the previously largest Chiemsee steamer "Ludwig Feßler" (built by the Maffei machine and locomotive factory ) was launched in stock .

In the summer of 1935 the following lines were used:

  • Stock - Herreninsel - Gstadt-Breitbrunn - Fraueninsel - Gstadt-Breitbrunn - Herreninsel - Stock
  • Stock - Herreninsel - Fraueninsel - Feldwies - Gstadt-Breitbrunn - Herreninsel - Stock (only from June 9th to September 15th)
  • Stock - Herreninsel - Fraueninsel - Chieming - Seebruck - Gstadt-Breitbrunn - Fraueninsel - Herreninsel - Stock
  • Herreninsel - Fraueninsel - Chieming and back (only from July 15 to August 31)
  • Stock - Breitbrunn  - Herreninsel - Gstadt - Fraueninsel and back (only Saturdays and Sundays from July 15 to August 31)
  • Stock - washing sheep and back (only Saturdays and Sundays from July 15th to August 31st)
  • Stock - Strandhotel - Felden and back (only Saturdays and Sundays from July 15 to August 31)
MS Barbara passes the former Herreninsel / Kalkofen pier on the journey from Bernau / Felden to Herreninsel (main pier)

In 1937 the direct connection from Felden to Herreninsel was established. However, the ships from Felden did not go to the main pier, but served the Kalkofen landing stage on the west side of the Herreninsel, which was near the farm buildings of the old castle. Since 1977, only the main pier, which is much cheaper to the new castle, has been served.

From 1993 to 2004 the courts dealt with a dispute between the Feßler company and the United Skippers Gstadt . The latter operated the route from Gstadt to Fraueninsel / Nordsteg with their ship MS Gstadt III . The dispute ended with a notarial settlement and the purchase of the MS Gstadt III and the north pier of the Fraueninsel by the company Feßler, which incorporated the ship into their fleet.
