Surname

According Donehoo is Chillisquaque a corruption of Chililisuagi what in the language of Shawnee as much as the location of the snow birds means. A Shawnee village had been located near the mouth of the river since about 1728 and is mentioned in the accounts of several early colonists . In the earliest mention of the river and village, a Shawnees petition to the Province of Pennsylvania, they are called Shallyschohking . Conrad Weiser chose the spelling Zilly-squachne when he crossed the river and traveled through the village on his way north to Onondaga , the capital of the Iroquois . The spelling Chelisquaqua dates from 1754 and Chillisquaquy appears in Scull's map from 1759 . In 1770, when the first settlers arrived here, the current spelling is used on another map of Scull. These are all variations of Chalakatha , one of the five Shawnee tribal clans , as well as the village this clan lived in.

The current townships East Chillisquaque and West Chillisquaque were named after the river, as well as the dependent village in the second township mentioned, all of which are located in Northumberland County.
