Chimney Rock National Historic Site is a striking rocks in Nebraska ( USA ), which since 1956 as National Historic Site is designated. It is located approximately 25 km southeast of Scotts Bluff National Monument near Bayard on the south bank of the North Platte River . In 1824, trappers and fur traders from the Rocky Mountain Fur Company , who traveled direct from St. Louis to the Rocky Mountains , established a route that ran along the North Platte River. Between the mid-1840s and the opening of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869, Chimney Rock was a key landmark for settlers moving west along the North Platte River on the Oregon Trail , California Trail, and Mormon Trail to help them make the most of the Had crossed prairies and the mountains were about to cross. Around half a million people passed along the river under the rock during this time. The pony express also ran along the river along the route.
National Historic Site
Chimney Rock was designated a National Historic Site-Type Memorial on August 9, 1956 and is administered by the Nebraska State Historical Society . There is a visitor center and museum of Native American and settler history that is one of the major museums on the Oregon Trail.
