Bayard is a city in Morrill County in the US state of Nebraska .

According to the United States Census 2000 , Bayard has a population of 1,247, 596 men and 651 women.

Bayard is located in western Morrill County about 25 km southeast of Scottsbluff on US Highway 26 . The most famous landmark of the city is the Chimney Rock , which has been designated as a National Historic Site since 1956 and served as a landmark for the early settlers when they took the land in the United States .
history
Bayard was founded in 1888 and got its name from settlers from Bayard, Iowa who wanted the name for their new city as well. The second business building was that of the "Bayard Transcript", a newspaper that is still published today. In 1900 the Burlington Railroad reached the area about a mile south of Bayard. This is how South Bayard came about . The city experienced its heyday between 1917 and 1920 when the Great Western Sugar Company established a factory. By 1920 three banks, hotels, twelve grocery stores and five restaurants were built. Today the city has an elementary school and a secondary school .
