State Quarters
The commemorative coin series 50 State Quarters was from 1999 American US from the Mint United States Mint issued. By the end of 2008, all 50 US states were honored with an individual design on the face of the 25-cent coin .
In addition, six connected areas are represented by the District of Columbia and US Territories program. These coins were issued during the course of 2009.
The 50 State Quarters Program
A separate “quarter” was published for each of the fifty states over a ten-year period. The image side always relates to the respective state and shows a personality, a tradition, an event or a typical symbol. The design comes from a resident of the state. The former motto of the USA " E pluribus unum " is integrated on each side of the picture.
Always the same value side is a variant of the regular quarters because it bears the words “United States of America”, “Liberty” and “ In God we trust ” to create the necessary design space on the picture side. The coins will be issued in the same order in which the states joined the United States.
Due to its great success, it was decided in 2007 to mint one coin each for the six areas connected to the USA: District of Columbia , Puerto Rico , Guam , American Samoa , the American Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands . These coins were issued until the end of 2009. From 2010 a new series will appear, the " America the Beautiful Quarters ".

Collector's value
The coins were not issued as potentially valuable collector's coins, but rather the series is intended to fuel interest in the coins of the United States of America after only minor changes in appearance over the past fifty years.
The high number of mints will not allow a significant increase in value, only the incorrect minting of the Wisconsin Quarter caused a sensation. Some of these coins show a semicircular line on the left side next to the corn cob, which looks like another leaf of the corn cob. There are two such variants: either the additional “leaf” points upwards or downwards.
No other misprints are known (as of 2009)
The issue as a silver coin, called "silver proof coinage", has a high collector's value and can be ordered from the US Mint.
Seigniorage
Seigniorage is the name given to the profit that the central bank or the state makes by creating money . Because the coins from the State Quarters program are eager to be collected, an estimated profit of approximately $ 4.6 billion has been made to date.
Special features of the coins
- Alabama. This quarter is the first coin of the United States of America to be debossed in Braille
- Connecticut. The oak tree shown, called Charter Oak , stood in Hartford from the 12th or 13th century until a storm on August 21, 1856 brought this American white oak down. The tree is said to have been unusually large.
- Georgia. The Georgia Quarter shows some inaccuracies in the outline of the state. For example, the approximate area of Dade County , the northwesternmost county in Georgia, has been omitted, the boundary line instead runs roughly along the boundary of Walker County .
- Indiana. Similar to the Georgia Quarter, the northwesternmost tip of the state, part of Lake County , was not taken into account in the Indiana Quarter .
- Iowa. There were very different designs to choose from for the Iowa Quarter, two designs were controversially discussed:
- One design shows the five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo , who served on the cruiser USS Juneau during World War II and died together when the ship was sunk off Guadalcanal .
- The final design chosen based on the painting Arbor Day by Grant Wood , needed to be clarified for the copyright issues.
- Missouri. Paul Jackson, winner of the Missouri Quarter design competition, complained that the US Mint engravers had deteriorated his design. According to the US Mint, it was technically not possible to implement Jackson's design. However, a private mint company managed to mint the design. In this context, there was talk of a monopoly of the US mint engravers and that the actual competition had been reduced to an advisory event for possible designs.
- Nebraska. One of the finalists in the competition for the Nebraska Quarter shows the Ponca Chief Standing Bear (not to be confused with Luther Standing Bear). 1879 Standing Bear won a trial before a United States District Court , where he still the human rights processes used phrase "An Indian is a person" ( "An Indian is a human being" stamped).
- Nevada. The Nevada Quarter has various flaws. On the one hand, the designer of the quarters describes the theme “Morning in Nevada” as a sunrise behind the mountains of the Sierra Nevada . A sunrise can only be observed from California behind these mountains. The motif comes from a scene from the Basin and Range . The representation of the sagebrush (mugwort) is wrong because the flower shown belongs to a different plant.
- New Hampshire. The model for this quarter, The Old Man of the Mountain , was a special rock formation that showed the face of an old man. In 2003 this formation fell victim to a landslide .
- South Dakota. Although South Dakota has the largest proportion of Native American people , the design of the South Dakota Quarter only shows things directly related to the European settlers:
- Mount Rushmore , a mountain in the Black Hills , this area is considered a sacred site by the Lakota Indians .
- The pheasant is a species from Central Asia that was introduced to North America by European settlers .
- The same applies to the wheat shown, which has displaced large areas of the former grassland.
- Several quarters show stars in the design. The number of stars on the quarters for New Hampshire, New York, Indiana, and Illinois indicate the order in which states ratified the constitution . The three stars in the Tennessee Quarter, on the other hand, symbolize the three large parts of Tennessee: East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee. Texas has only one star in the quarter design, this represents the Lone Star State , as Texas is often called.
