The Chinchaga River is an approximately 500 km long left tributary of the Hay River in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta .
River course
The Chinchaga River has its origin in the 790 m high Chinchaga Lakes in northeast British Columbia. Initially it flows mainly in an easterly direction and after 40 km it crosses the border into Alberta. Later, the Tanghe Creek flows into the Chinchaga River from the north. A few kilometers later this forms the northern border of the Chinchaga Wildland Park over a distance of 30 km . Shortly afterwards, the Thordarson Creek flows into the Chinchaga River from the south. This now turns to the north-northeast and later to the east. Not far from the Keg River settlement , the Chinchaga River turns north. It maintains the main flow direction for its lower 200 km. Coming from the west, the Haig River meets the Chinchaga River. The Alberta Highway 58 ( High Level - Rainbow Lake ) crosses the river 85 km above its confluence with the Hay River. The estuary is 25 km east of Zama Lake . The Chinchaga River shows a strongly meandering behavior along its entire course .
Hydrology
The Chinchaga River drains an area of around 10,700 km². The mean discharge 85 km above the mouth is 28.6 m³ / s. The highest monthly mean runoff occurs in May during the snowmelt and is 122 m³ / s.
The Chinchaga River is a black water river , which means that its water is clear and brownish in color, which is due to the large amount of dissolved humic acids . This is typical of rivers that drain peat and bog areas .
Fish fauna
The following fish species are found in the Chinchaga River: the sucker carp species Catostomus catostomus ("longnose sucker") and Catostomus commersoni ("white sucker"), Couesius plumbeus ("lake chub"), the percussionist Percopsis omiscomaycus , pike ( Esox lucius ), Glass eye perch ( Stizostedion vitreum ), North American silverfish ( Culaea inconstans ), Margariscus margarita (“pearl dace”) and Arctic grayling ( Thymallus arcticus ).
