The Hay River is a 702 km long river in Canada .

It rises in northwest Alberta and flows from there first in a northwest direction to British Columbia . After a few kilometers, its course then leads back in an easterly direction back to Alberta. At Meander River it changes its path in a northerly direction and finally flows into the Great Slave Lake at the Hay River town of the same name . The river has a catchment area of 48,200 km² and forms, among other things, Rainbow Lake .

There are several small towns on the Hay River, such as Rainbow Lake , Steen River, and Enterprise .

Shortly before it flows into the Great Slave Lake, the river passes the Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park at Enterprise . Here it falls at the Alexandra Falls and the Louise Falls by 33 meters and 15 meters respectively.
