Chitetsu Watanabe

Chitetsu Watanabe (born March 5, 1907 in Niigata Prefecture , Japan ; died February 23, 2020 in Jōetsu , ibid) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age was verified by the Gerontology Research Group . On February 12, 2020, he was named the oldest living man in the world by the Guinness Book of Records .

Watanabe was born into a farming family in Niigata Prefecture. After graduating from agricultural school, he moved to Taiwan at the age of 20 , where he spent 18 years working in sugar cane production . He returned to Japan after World War II and worked as an employee in Niigata Prefecture until he retired. With Masazō Nonaka's death on January 20, 2019, Watanabe became the oldest living man.

He lived with one of his sons until he was 108 years old. According to his family, he had a total of five children, 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. For the past few years he has lived in a nursing home.
