Choi In-ho (born October 17, 1945 in Seoul , † September 25, 2013 ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Choi studied English literature at Yonsei University .

In 1963 he took part in a Hankook Ilbo literary competition with his short story In the Hole in the Wall (벽 구멍 으로) and was among the finalists, but his story was allegedly not published, so that his official debut falls in 1967, when he won the prize for young authors at a Chosun Ilbo competition with an apprentice patient (견습 환자) .

His early works deal with people during industrialization, while showing a satirical picture of bourgeois consumption. In the mid-1970s, Choi In-ho began to deal with the problem of alienation. This is also the case in his famous novel Deep, Blue Night (깊고 푸른 밤), which is about a trip by two Koreans through the USA.

Many of Choi In-ho's works are bestsellers and some were used as models for film or television plays. The author is therefore also considered an icon of the 1970s. One example of his success is the novel Heimat der Sterne (별 들의 고향), which criticizes the male-dominated society of South Korea. A broken hearted woman works in a hostess bar and forms various relationships with men. The book became a bestseller, and the film, released in 1974, was so popular that the main character's name became an expression for young girls in hostess bars.

On September 25, 2013, the writer lost his battle with salivary gland cancer.
