The Khovanskoye Cemetery ( Russian Хованское кладбище ) in the Sossenskoye settlement, Moscow's Novomoskowski district on the Moscow motorway ring (around the 21st kilometer stone) is the largest cemetery in Europe .

The cemetery has an area of more than 197 hectares . It is divided into three sections:

  • the 1972 opened Khovanskoe Central Cemetery with 87.72 hectares
  • the north cemetery opened in 1978 with an area of 60 hectares
  • and the western part, which was dedicated as a cemetery in 1992 with another 50.12 hectares.

In the cemetery there is a cemetery chapel of the Russian Orthodox Church , which was also visited by the Patriarch of Moscow and all of Russia , Alexius II . In 1988 a crematorium was built near the cemetery .

On May 14, 2016, three Tajik migrant workers died in the cemetery during a fight between hundreds of young prisoners , mainly from the North Caucasus , and a group of mostly Tajik migrants who were employed as cemetery workers. According to Russian prosecutors, this fight came about as a result of efforts by former Moscow police officer Nikita Moschenko and Yuri Khabuyev from the Moscow City Funeral Service to take control of the nursery and grave maintenance (with a monthly turnover of 20 million rubles).
