Christa Thiel (born May 4, 1954 in Mainz ) is a German lawyer and sports official.

Career

Thiel was active as a tournament dancer. She has been working as a lawyer in Wiesbaden since her doctorate .

In 1998 she became chairwoman of the federal committee "Women in Sport" of the German Sports Association (DSB).

In 1999 she moved up to the presidium of the German Swimming Association (DSV), from 2000 to 2016 she was its president. During her tenure, the medal yield of German pool swimmers at the Olympic Games fell continuously from twelve (Atlanta 1996) to five in Athens in 2004 and two in Beijing in 2008 . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the DSV went without a medal in the pool competitions for the first time in 80 years. Christa Thiel then set up a commission of experts to review and improve the performance of water sports enthusiasts at the Olympic Games. After the pool swimmers remained without a medal in Rio in 2016 , they announced in August that they would no longer compete in the upcoming election. In addition, there was increasing criticism of her leadership style; in 2012 she was only confirmed in office with 57% without an opponent. At the Association Day on November 5, 2016, Thiel was elected Honorary President of the DSV. Her successor as president of the association was Gabi Dörries , who had previously headed the swimming division.

Christa Thiel has been a member of the Bureau of the European Swimming Federation (LEN) since 2004 . From 2008 to 2012 she was its treasurer and in September 2012 she was elected Vice President of the LEN. In 2002 she worked as an Independent Observer for the World Anti-Doping Agency at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. From 2002 to 2005 she was Vice President International of the German Sports Confederation (DSB). Thereafter, Thiel was chairwoman of the conference of the leading associations in the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and a member of the supervisory board of the National Anti-Doping Agency . Since the end of 2010 she has been Vice President of Competitive Sports in the German Olympic Sports Confederation. She is also the Chair of the Disciplinary Panel of the International Swimming Federation FINA .

As a member of the jury on the “Green Belt” committee, she advocates the promotion of talent and the compatibility of school and sporting training for young people.
