history

Abandoned Church

The first church was built as an emergency church on the former St. Mang Bridge in 1926/27 in a simpler form than originally planned, after the financial crisis and inflation after the First World War had destroyed the funds collected by the church building association. In 1965 the interior was redesigned as part of the liturgical reform . In 1973 the church was demolished.

It was the parish church of the Kempten city parish, newly created in 1931, of the Ascension of Christ. The church was replaced by the new one in 1971. In 1963 the parish of the Ascension of Christ became the daughter parish of St. Ulrich , which in 1964 was elevated to the status of a city parish for Kempten-Ost.

New Church

The new church was built between 1969 and 1971 according to plans by the architect Robert Gerum. The church was temporarily closed due to structural defects. It has been accessible again since 2010.

Since September 1, 2011, the formerly independent parish has been affiliated to the parish of the parish of St. Lorenz as a subsidiary parish .

With the dissolution of the parish of Ascension Day, opportunities arose for a new use of the buildings in Freudental. The conversion to the church-social center of the Ascension of Christ has been going on since 2016. The reopening is scheduled for the end of 2017.

Furnishing

In a side chapel of the new church is the Hohenthanner Altar , which is said to come from the castle chapel of Hohentann Castle : The late Gothic altarpiece was installed in the new Ascension Church in Freudental in a specially created chapel. The winged altar that stood in front of it in the choir of the old church is considered the work of the Memmingen painter Ivo Strigel . In the foliage of this altar is the date 1513. Under the tracery of the shrine , between the figures of St. Benedict and St. Wolfgang a plastic representation of the protective mantle Madonna, which is said to have been made around 1420/30. In the top of the shrine there is a sculpture of St. Sebastian . The paintings on the inner wings show St. Valentin and St. Hermit Anthony. On the outer wings the Saints Margaret and Ottilie are depicted, on the predella the ship of St. Ursula .
