The family relationships in the Besemann family of artists were often the cause of biographical mix-ups and the resulting incorrect attributions. Christian Besemann himself was born out of wedlock, but could be the son of Heinrich Besemann , who also worked in Göttingen, who was also working as a copper engraver in Göttingen at the same time. Christian Andreas Besemann is probably identical to L. Besemann described in Thieme-Becker and the General Artists' Lexicon . He is the father of the copper engraver and later lithographer Friedrich Besemann , who also worked in Göttingen, and the painter Adolf Besemann . There are frequent mix-ups and incorrect attributions between Christian Andreas and Friedrich Besemann.

Besemann enrolled as a student. math. 1789 in Göttingen and at the same time began working as a draftsman for the university, in 1806 he was employed as a university draftsman. As a draftsman, he also provided the professors with illustrations for their publications. For Georg Franz Hoffmann's work Hortus Gottingensis , published in 1793, he provided two views of the Old Botanical Garden of the Georg August University. In 1794/95 he illustrated Friedrich Benjamin Osiander's memorabilia for medicine and obstetrics .

As a landscape eraser, Besemann created small portfolios, some of which he also colored by hand. In 1795 he created views of the Weser , consisting of six sheets, and probably at the same time motifs from the Harz Mountains. In 1817 he created New Views of Göttingen and the surrounding area consisting of twelve sheets. In addition, from 1800 onwards he improved his income with the family book sheets , which were particularly popular with students and which had come up from 1770 by the Göttingen bookbinder and printer Johannes Carl Wiederhold (1743–1826). About 30 different motifs of these small-format engravings are known from him.

In Göttingen Besemann (and his son Friedrich) competed with the university engraver Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen, who was about the same age .
