Otto Deneke

Otto Deneke (born February 20, 1875 in Adelebsen ; † July 10, 1956 in Göttingen ) was a German lawyer , local politician, cultural historian and bibliophile .

Life

Otto Deneke studied from 1893 jurisprudence at the Georg-August University of Goettingen . With a doctoral thesis on the renewal certificate , he was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD . After passing both state exam in Göttingen admitted to the bar in 1901, he was up in 1940 as a lawyer and counsel involved. He was known for his revision course for lawyers. After that he only worked as a private scholar . He documented his early tendencies towards bibliophilia as early as 1909 by publishing an auction catalog in his private library. He was involved in Göttingen's local politics and was mayor of the city from 1909 to 1912. Before the First World War he was mainly concerned with Goethe research and was considered a connoisseur of Goethe's prints. In the November Revolution of 1918 he was elected as the soldier's representative in the Workers 'and Soldiers' Council of the city of Göttingen. From 1918 to 1933 he mainly worked as a private tutor for law students from Göttingen.

Deneke became known for his diverse journalistic activities in the fields of literary history , local history in Göttingen and university and student history . He published the Göttingen auxiliary hours , 20 of which were self-published between 1922 and 1950 and was a regular contributor to columnist articles in his areas of interest in both the Göttinger Zeitung and the Göttinger Tageblatt and their supplements . Deneke is one of the founders of Lichtenberg research . He was the founder of the Graetzel Society in Göttingen, the news of which he published in the context of his extra hours in Göttingen as messages from the Graetzel Society in Göttingen , and the Goethe Society . After the Second World War, his creativity slackened considerably due to health issues. He left his library collection to the Göttingen Municipal Museum. His literary estate is in the special collections of the Lower Saxony State and University Library in Göttingen and has been freely accessible since 2001.
