Christian Armel Bassila (born October 5, 1977 in Paris ) is a former French football player with a Congolese passport.
Career
The defensive midfielder , who can also be used in central defense , began playing football at US Créteil in 1983 . In 1992 he moved to the youth department of Olympique Lyon , where he made it to the professional squad in 1996. By 1999 he had played 44 games and scored two goals.
For the 1999/00 season Bassila moved to Stade Rennes , where he scored a goal in 24 games by August 2000. He was then awarded to West Ham United until 2001 , and then to Racing Strasbourg until 2002 . After the Strasbourgers took an option to buy, Bassila played in Alsace until 2005 . In total, he completed 122 games for Racing and scored ten times.
The following season Bassila spent at Sunderland , which he left in the summer of 2006 for AE Larisa . Bassila was able to win the Greek Cup with Larisa . It was the first cup win since 1985 and only the second in the history of the AEL club . In the final they beat Panathinaikos Athens 2-1. Bassila played for the full 90 minutes. For the 2007/08 season, the Frenchman switched to Energie Cottbus , where he signed a contract dated until 2009. The defensive player made his Bundesliga debut on the 4th matchday of the season, on September 1, 2007 in a 1-1 draw against 1. FC Nürnberg . Bassila soon worked out a regular place in the midfield of the Lausitzer. At the end of the season, Energie secured relegation. In 2008, after he received no more attention at the beginning of the season, the midfielder moved to his home country for free transfer to the second division team EA Guingamp , with whom he won the French Cup in May 2009, shortly before the end of the transfer . He led his team as captain in the final against Stade Rennes . In the league things went worse and Guingamp had to fight to stay up until the end of the season.
In the following season they also played in the UEFA Europa League thanks to the cup win . They only started there from the play-off, but failed at the top German club Hamburger SV . After a 1: 5 in the first leg in Guingamp they lost 1: 2 in the second leg in Hamburg. Things went very badly in the league and at the end of the season they were relegated to the third division ( Championnat de France National ). In 2011 the team managed to get promoted again, but Bassila was no longer used and ended his career at the end of the season.
National team
Christian Bassila received an invitation to the Congolese national team in 2006 . However, due to FIFA regulations, he was not allowed to compete for the African country, as he had already played for France's U-21 national team.
