Christian Bérard , also called Bébé (born August 20, 1902 in Paris ; † February 13, 1949 there ) was a French artist , illustrator and designer .

Life

Christian Bérard attended the Lycée Janson de Sailly high school and studied at the Académie Ranson in the early 1920s , under Édouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis . In 1925, Bérard exhibited his paintings for the first time at the Pierre Galerie in Paris.

At the beginning of his career he had an interest in designing theater sets and costumes - in the 1930s and 1940s Bérard and Jean-Michel Frank (1895–1941) played an important role in the development of French theater design. He also worked as a fashion designer for Coco Chanel , Elsa Schiaparelli and Nina Ricci . Bérard's most renowned achievement was probably his designs for Jean Cocteau's film La Belle et la Bête (1946).

Together with his partner Boris Evgenyevich Kochno (1904–1990), the Russian poet , dancer and librettist , Bérard was one of the founders of the Ballet des Champs-Élysées after the Second World War . Christian Bérard died unexpectedly on the stage of the Théâtre de Marigny .
