Christian Flor (composer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian Flor (* 1626 in Neukirchen (Ostholstein) ; † September 28, 1697 there ) was a German composer and organist .

Life

Flor came from a pastor family widespread in Schleswig-Holstein and was born the son of Pastor Otto Flor and his wife Catharina. He probably received his musical training from the organ masters in Hamburg or Lübeck . From 1652 he was organist at St. Marien in Rendsburg and in 1653 married Margarethe Hudemann († 1671), the daughter of his predecessor. A daughter Catharina was baptized on October 24, 1653 in Rendsburg. In 1654 at the latest he became organist at St. Lamberti in Lüneburg. After the death of his wife, he married Anna Dorothea Lange (1641–1685). From 1676 until his death he was (as the predecessor of Georg Böhm ) also organist at St. Johannis in Lüneburg. In 1683 he acquired the citizenship of Lüneburg.

Flor was known nationwide as an organist and organ expert. He made a major contribution to Lüneburg becoming one of the most important north German music centers of the time. His son Johann Georg (1679–1728) worked like his father as an organist at St. Lamberti in Lüneburg, his son Gottfried Philipp (1682–1723) from 1707 as an organist at St. Michaelis in Lüneburg.

In 1667 Flor composed a St. Matthew Passion, which is one of the first oratorical passions in music history. In addition to a few surviving organ works and independent harpsichord compositions, Flor created several collections of songs, occasional music and liturgical vocal works.

During his stay in Lüneburg as a student, Johann Sebastian Bach probably got to know compositions by Flor and was influenced by them. According to other sources, Bach is said to have known Flor personally and valued his compositions. The fact that both Johann Gottfried Walther (1732) and Johann Mattheson list it in their music lexicons also speaks for its reputation . The latter describes him in his basis of an honor gate (1740) as "the famous Lüneburg organist."
