Christian Friedrich Scheithauer

Christian Friedrich Scheithauer (born December 26, 1771 in Jahnsbach , † February 2, 1846 in Chemnitz ) was a German astronomer and teacher .

Life

Scheithauer was born in Jahnsbach as the son of a master hunter of the gentlemen von Schönberg on Gelenau . From 1786 to 1794 he attended the Chemnitz Latin School . From 1794 he was employed as a girls' school teacher in Chemnitz , where he gained recognition as a reformer and modernizer in the school system.

Scheithauer was co-discoverer of the comet of 1817 (with Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers ), 1818 III (with Jean-Louis Pons and Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel ), discoverer of the comet 1824 II and stood with well-known astronomers of his time, such as Johann Elert Bode and Wilhelm Gotthelf Lohrmann , in contact.
