Origin and professional career

Starklof was born into a family of craftsmen in Weida, his father Johann Gottfried Starklof († before 1784) was a bookbinder . At a young age, Starklof first became a soldier and first served in the Electoral Saxon and later in the Prussian army . In 1759 he became the valet of Duke Georg Ludwig of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf and after his death remained in the service of his two sons, whom he accompanied on their extensive study trip to Switzerland and Italy from 1764 to 1769 . In the following years he was also a valet in the small entourage of Prince Peter Friedrich Ludwig , who was appointed sovereign of the Duchy of Oldenburg , and accompanied him on his grand tour to Russia, England and Denmark and during Peter's participation as an officer in the Russo-Turkish War in 1774. In his almost twenty-five years of service, Starklof earned the prince's full confidence. Before he took office, Prince Starklof was appointed registrar at the Chamber in Oldenburg in February 1784 in order to enable him to set up his own household. In the following years the duke also looked after his former servant and appointed him postmaster of what was initially the only post office in the royal seat when the private post office in the duchy was nationalized in May 1800 . On August 6, 1808, the Duke promoted Starklof to director of the rapidly expanding postal administration, which enabled Starklof to secure a respected position in the socially not strictly differentiated city. He had already joined the Freemasons in Saint Petersburg in 1774 and now also played an important role in the Oldenburg lodge to the golden stag as secretary , first overseer and deputy master. During the French period in Oldenburg , Starklof did not remain in the civil service, but accompanied Duke Peter into exile in Russia in February 1811 . After his return in November 1813, he was returned to his old post as post director, which he held until his death.
