Christian Gottlob August Bergt (born June 17, 1772 in Oederan near Freiberg , † February 10, 1837 in Budissin , today Bautzen ) was a German organist and composer .

Life

Bergt was born as the son of the town musician in Oederan. In 1784 he came to the Kreuzschule in Dresden . From 1791 he studied Protestant theology at the University of Leipzig . After passing his exam in 1794, he was first tutor for the children of the superintendent at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. At the same time he studied music and was appointed organist at the St. Petri Cathedral in Bautzen in 1802 and soon afterwards also as a music teacher at the local teachers' college. He held these positions until his death.

Bergt's extensive work, which has only partially appeared in print, includes both secular and sacred music, the latter having the greater aftereffect and in some cases is still performed today. Due to the character of the Bautzen Cathedral as a simultaneous church , Bergt created works of both Protestant and Catholic church music.
