Christian Gottlob Kayser

Christian Gottlob Kayser (born December 21, 1782 in Priester bei Eilenburg , † November 16, 1857 in Leipzig ) was a bibliographer , bookseller and independent publisher who published the six-volume Complete Book Lexicon between 1834 and 1836 . Along with Wilhelm Heinsius, he is considered the founder of the book lexicon and literature catalog of the modern age.

Life

Christian Gottlob Kayser gained his first experience creating a book lexicon with Wilhelm Heinsius, whom he supported as an assistant in writing his general book lexicon . He worked as an independent bookseller and publisher in Leipzig from 1824 to 1841 and published his own complete book encyclopedia between 1834 and 1836 , which covered the German-language books from 1750 to 1832 and is considered a continuation of Heinsius' work.

Although Kayser's book lexicon still had a few gaps, he was able to convince specialists and customers with his methodical and careful work. He added the first names of the authors and dissolved pseudonyms or anonymous . In contrast to Heinsius, Kayser listed all works of fiction under the name of the author.

In 1841 Christian Gottlob Kayser handed over his publishing house to Bernhard Tauchnitz , to whom he remained connected and supported until the end of his life. The Tauchnitz publishing house continued Kayser's work. The Complete Book Lexicon, comprising 36 volumes, was published by 1911 for the years 1750 to 1910.
