Christian Heinrich Koch (born August 31, 1781 in Sterbfritz ; † May 28, 1861 in Marburg ) was a German pedagogue and classical philologist .

Life

Christian Heinrich Koch studied theology at the Philipps University in Marburg . After the exam (1803) he went to Frankfurt am Main as an educator for a year . In 1804 he became the third teacher at the pedagogy in Marburg , where he worked for almost thirty years.

In addition to his work at the school, Koch pursued an academic career. On August 11, 1809, he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate , on March 17, 1810 his habilitation followed . Since then he has lectured on classical philology. On June 2, 1815, Koch was appointed associate professor of Greek and Roman literature and antiquity. In his lectures he mainly dealt with the methodology and encyclopedia of philology, Greek and Roman literature, Latin style and pedagogy. From autumn 1815 to March 1823 he was also co-director of the philological seminar, which he led alone in the summer semester of 1820. On April 16, 1833, Koch was given a full professorship in education and thus had an income that enabled him to give up school lessons. At Easter 1859, Koch finished teaching at the age of 77.

Christian Koch's teaching and research activities aimed at teacher training. He dealt with pedagogy from its ancient origins. Apart from a school edition of the Odyssey (1822) and smaller literary studies, he stood out particularly through the synthetic reworking of the basic pedagogical works of Niemeyer and Ruhkopf (1837). Since Koch abstained from all polemics and criticism , the work received little attention from the professional world.
