Huma Abedin (2016)

Huma Mahmood Abedin (born July 28, 1976 in Kalamazoo , Michigan ) is an American political advisor , employee and close confidante of Hillary Clinton . Abedin was Clinton's deputy chief of staff and personal assistant as US Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013 and subsequently chaired the transition team that accompanied Clinton's political path after she left ministerial office. She was vice chairman of Hillary Clinton's unsuccessful 2016 presidential campaign.

Family and education

Abedin was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to the Pakistani Saleha Mahmood Abedin and the Indian Syed Zainul Abedin (* 1928 in British India , † 1993); both worked as teachers. When she was two years old, her family moved with her to Jeddah , Saudi Arabia . Her father was a graduate of the Indian Aligarh Muslim University , and later he also received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania . Her mother also received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and was later professor of sociology at Dar Al-Hekma College in Jeddah. Huma Abedin returned to the United States and studied at George Washington University .

Abedin began a White House internship in 1996 and was assigned to Hillary Clinton. Since then, Abedin has worked for her as a personal assistant, confidante and advisor, including in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2010, Time Magazine listed her among the "40 under 40" as part of a "new generation of social leaders" and "rising stars in American politics". At a celebration before Abedin's wedding to the politician Anthony Weiner , Clinton said in a speech: “I only have one daughter. But if I had a second daughter, it would [be] Huma ”. A congressional investigation is underway against Abedin about possible private sector work and pay during this public activity.

After Clinton's departure from the State Department in January 2013, Abedin led Hillary Clinton's personal transition team. She played a central role in Clinton's environment in Hillary Clinton's candidacy for the US presidency in 2016 and was involved in all selection interviews for key positions. As deputy head of the election campaign - after John Podesta as head and Robby Mook as manager in third position on the team - she was given a more independent and visible role than before. In December 2015, for example, she publicly expressed her outrage over the proposal by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to temporarily deny all Muslims entry to the United States after Trump repeatedly publicly attacked her and her husband.

In the summer of 2016, Abedin's dual role during Clinton's tenure as Secretary of State was highlighted, as she had also worked for the private Clinton Foundation as a government employee and was suspected of preferring its donors when making appointments with the Secretary of State.

Alleged connections to the Muslim Brotherhood

In June 2012, Republican Congressmen Michele Bachmann , Trent Franks , Louie Gohmert , Tom Rooney, and Lynn Westmoreland wrote to Deputy Inspector General of the State Department, Harold W. Geisel, calling for an investigation into the influence of individuals with alleged connections on foreign policy to the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood , including Abedin. A study by the Center for Security Policy was cited, alleging that Abedin has "three family members - her late father, mother and brother - who are associated with Muslim Brotherhood workers and / or organizations". The allegations have been labeled "paranoid", "unfounded" and "part of a smear campaign" by the Washington Post .

Bachmann's former campaign manager Ed Rollins described the allegations as "extreme and dishonest" and called on Bachmann to apologize to Abedin. The Anti-Defamation League condemned the campaign and called on the Republican Party to stop spreading conspiracy theories. Bachmann never apologized. Republican politicians John McCain , Lindsey Graham , Scott Brown and Ed Rollins defended Abedin against these allegations. Abedin's family was placed under police protection after being threatened by a Muslim from New Jersey as a result of the controversy .

Private

Abedin speaks English, Urdu and Arabic . On July 10, 2010, she married then Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner . Former US President Bill Clinton was also present at the wedding reception at Oheka Castle in Huntington . Abedin stood by her husband when he stepped down from his mandate in mid-2011 due to a sexting scandal and gave birth to their son Jordan Zain Weiner in December 2011. When further sex revelations became known during his attempt to comeback for the New York mayoral election in July 2013, she expressed her support at a press conference, which has been compared to the behavior of her sponsor Hillary Clinton in her husband's affairs. The documentary film Weiner portrays her role in this election campaign as a wife who stays away from cameras but plays out the relationships with the Clintons' donor network and embodies the gender stereotype of the silently suffering, adorable wife . In August 2016, she announced her split from Weiner after he relapsed.

Eleven days before the 2016 US presidential election , FBI Director James B. Comey announced a new "investigation" into Clinton's use of a private e-mail server while serving as Secretary of State in a letter to Congressman. After Comey declared in July 2016 that there was no basis for a criminal complaint against Hillary Clinton, he cited emails that Huma Abedin had forwarded from Clinton's account to Anthony Weiner's laptop as the reason for the reopening. Because no misconduct was found, the proceedings were discontinued two days before the 2016 presidential election .
