Christian Richter II (1999)

Christian Richter (called Christian Richter II ("Zwo")) (born July 11, 1941 in Nossen ; †  February 7, 2009 in Cologne ) was a German lawyer and criminal defense attorney .

Life

Christian Richter grew up in Ahrensburg . After graduating from high school, he began his law studies in Göttingen and finished it in Munich . There he was also politically active in the SPD .

From 1974 Richter worked as a criminal defense lawyer in Cologne, mainly in the areas of commercial and tax criminal law. His career began with the mammoth litigation surrounding the bankruptcy of the Cologne private bank Herstatt .

Richter was a member of the Criminal Law Committee of the German Lawyers' Association from 1983 to 1996 and was considered a "passionate criminal defense attorney" who, through his essays and lectures, decisively shaped the theory and practice of criminal defense . In one of his last publications he wrote “Criminal law is the legitimate exercise of violence by one's own state against one's own citizen. This exercise of violence is only tolerable if it is in turn embedded in a balanced system of control and equilibrium. But since the balance of power is so unevenly distributed - here the almighty state with all its resources, there the individual, if not isolated citizen - there is an elementary need for great figures to guarantee the realization of the balance, as patron saint, so to speak. The great defense attorney therefore corresponds to an ark type. "

Christian Richter received the addition of "II" to his name because there was a lawyer of the same name at the Cologne Regional Court.

Richter, who was considered an edgy personality, also defended many prominent clients, such as the former WestLB bosses Jürgen Sengera and Friedel Neuber , the former Cologne city director Klaus Heugel and most recently Franjo Pooth . However, he did not want to be considered a star lawyer: for him there are "no unimportant cases".
