Christian Rietschel

Christian Rietschel (born March 5, 1908 in Sachsendorf near Wurzen , † September 3, 1997 in Bad Salzuflen ) was a German writer and art historian, graphic artist and Protestant theologian. He was the great-grandson of the sculptor Ernst Rietschel .

Life

Rietschel, the son of the pastor Lic. Ernst Rietschel, passed his matriculation examination at the Princely and State School Grimma in 1927 . From 1927 to 1931 he studied graphics and painting in Leipzig and Berlin with Walter Tiemann and Emil Rudolf Weiß . A study trip took him to France and Italy. He then studied theology in Vienna, Tübingen and Marburg until 1935.

Rietschel took his teaching vicariate from the art service of the Evangelical Church in Berlin. From 1936 he worked in the pastoral ministry and received his ordination in Zettlitz near Rochlitz. From 1941 he was drafted into military service with subsequent imprisonment.

From 1949 to 1973 he was the editor-in-chief of the church newspaper Der Sonntag published in Radebeul . In 1950 he was also appointed head of the art service of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saxony and a member of the working committee of the Evangelical Church Building Day. He received his official residence in the Minckwitzschen Weinberghaus in Radebeul - Niederlößnitz .

There was an artistic collaboration for some time with the Schilling Bell Foundry in Apolda: In consultation with master bell founder Franz Schilling , Christian Rietschel designed the jewelry for a bell in Meissen Cathedral in 1959 - and thus aroused Franz Schilling's interest in the almost forgotten technique of carving bell .

In 1960 Rietschel's doctorate to become Dr. theol. at the theological faculty of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig, the following year he became a member of the board of trustees of the Institute for Church Building and Church Art of the Present in Marburg .

In 1967 he was appointed to the cathedral chapter of the Meissen Monastery .

In 1973 Rietschel moved to Bad Salzuflen, where he died in 1997.

Rietschel was buried in the Radebeul-West cemetery next to his son, who died young.

Works

Rietschel created numerous wall paintings, church posters and book illustrations, but also bell decorations and liturgical vestments, such as the canons' mantles of the Meissen cathedral chapter in the 1960s. Rietschel is the author of innumerable works, especially those of art history. He is also the editor of several editions of the memories from my life of his great-grandfather, the sculptor Ernst Rietschel .

In 1961, on the occasion of a serious accident, Rietschel donated the designs for the 35 colored glass pictures in the altar windows to the Kötzschenbrodaer Friedenskirche .
