Christian Schmid (dialectologist)

Christian Schmid (born May 26, 1947 in Rocourt ), at times also Christian Schmid-Cadalbert, is a Swiss dialectologist , writer and radio editor .

Life

Born as the son of a border guard in Rocourt in what was then the Bernese Jura (now the Canton of Jura ), he came to Neu allschwil at the age of seven , later to the city of Basel , and to Ittigen at the age of thirteen . From 1963 he trained as a chemical laboratory assistant and worked in this field for several years. After attaining the Matura in the correspondence course , he studied German and English at the University of Basel , did his doctorate in 1983 on Ortnit (Low German legend) and then worked on three volumes of the Language Atlas of German-speaking Switzerland .

In 1986 he published an edited new edition of Eugen Dieth's book Schwyzertütschi Dialäktschrift as well as his first volume of poetry Affenhaus, 1987 together with Barbara Traber the dialect literature -Anthologie Gredt u gschribe; In the years that followed, he published his own literary texts , now in Bern German , both bound and prose, and some folklore essays.

He has been working for Swiss Radio DRS since 1988 , where he founded the Schnabelweid series in 1991 , which deals with dialect topics on a weekly basis and for which Schmid worked as an editor until his retirement in May 2012. He published a selection in three books of the explanations on the origin and use of dialect expressions given in the first part of the program, the Schnabelweid mailbox, in response to audience requests.

Christian Schmid was married to the SP politician Yolanda Cadalbert . He has been married to the journalist and author Praxedis Kaspar since 2007.
