history
The village was first mentioned in 1148 as a Rocort . The name probably goes back to the Germanic personal name Radulf . The village belonged to the Lords of Rocourt, whose castle no longer exists today. When these died out, Rocourt fell to the Duchy of Basel . From the 16th to the 18th century the village belonged to the Meieramt Chevenez . On the night of June 4th to 5th, 1785, numerous houses fell victim to a conflagration. From 1793 to 1815 Rocourt belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont-Terrible , from 1800 it was linked to the Département Haut-Rhin . By decision of the Congress of Vienna , the place came to the canton of Bern in 1815 and on January 1, 1979 to the newly founded canton of Jura.
Attractions
The parish church of Saint-François-Xavier was built in 1857 on the foundations of a previous building. Before this church was built, Rocourt belonged to the parish of Grandfontaine . In the town center there are still numerous characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
