history
The discovery of around 600 Roman silver coins from the 3rd century AD in the municipality of Cras Roquet is evidence of settlement as early as Roman times. The village is first mentioned as Cova in 1136 . Coeuve shared the checkered history of Ajoie, which first came to the Duchy of Basel in 1271 . In the 16th century it became the capital of one of the five dairy farms ( mairies ) in the Ajoie. During the unrest from 1730 to 1740, the villagers revolted against the prince-bishop's authorities. From 1793 to 1815 Coeuve belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont-Terrible , from 1800 it was linked to the Département Haut-Rhin . By decision of the Congress of Vienna , the place came to the canton of Bern in 1815 and on January 1, 1979 to the newly founded canton of Jura.
Attractions
The village developed on the axis running across the Coeuvatte valley between the church and the castle. The parish church of Saint-Jean-devant-la-Porte-Latine was rebuilt in 1825, incorporating the mighty ashlar tower of the previous building from the 13th and 14th centuries. The church windows are in the Gothic style, while the glass panes are from 1946. The castle, whose origins go back to the 16th century, is now an agricultural estate. A special feature of Coeuve is the 18th century wash house, which stands at the source of the Coeuvatte and was added to the list of historical monuments in 1973.
