Christian Vogel (anthropologist)

Christian Vogel (born September 16, 1933 in Berlin ; † December 2, 1994 in Gleichen ) was a German anthropologist and sociobiologist .

Life

Christian Vogel studied at the universities of Kiel and Basel zoology, botany and geology, and in 1960 with his by the evolutionary biologist Adolf Remane supervised dissertation of recent variability and shape development of the lower jaw anthropoids at the University of Kiel doctorate . In 1964 he completed his habilitation in Kiel with his habilitation thesis Morphological studies on the facial skull of catarrhine primates and in 1966 he became a private lecturer . In 1968 he moved to the University of Hamburg as a lecturer , returned to Kiel as a professor in 1970 and became a full professor of anthropology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen in 1972 .

In his 1968 started many years in India and later in Nepal carried out field project on the behavior of the tribe of Slim monkeys within the family of Cercopithecidae belonging langurs he came to the conclusion that, contrary to accepted principles of conservation in a society, the principle of self-interest prevails and animals are genetic egoists , as shown in monkeys by the killing of children by the usurper of a harem , who thereby diverts maternal care from the children conceived by his predecessor to his own.

Christian Vogel was a member of the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences and was accepted as a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1978 in the Anthropology Section and in 1981 as a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .

Since 1973 he has been co-editor of the journal for morphology and anthropology .
