Christian Freiherr von Hammerstein (born April 22, 1933 in Schwerin ; † August 21, 2019 in Berlin ) was a German administrative lawyer and former ministerial director . D.

Life

Christian von Hammerstein was a son of the lawyer of the same name, Christian von Hammerstein, from his second marriage to Eleonore, née. Schröder (* 1905), a daughter of the landowner Ladislaus Schröder on Groß Siemen . He was married and had three sons.

Von Hammerstein studied law in Heidelberg and Göttingen . In 1953 he became a member of the Corps Vandalo-Guestphalia in Heidelberg . He was awarded a Dr. jur. did his doctorate and then completed his trainee service with the assessor exam. After assignments in the area of ​​the Federal Ministry of the Interior , Hammerstein, who was active in the fifth generation in the civil service, was responsible from 1990 to 1998 as ministerial director for the establishment and management of the secretariat of the independent government commission on party assets in Berlin. On July 8, 1998 he succeeded Hans-Jürgen Papier as chairman of the Independent Commission, which had existed since June 1, 1990, to review the assets of the parties and mass organizations of the GDR (UKPV). On the occasion of the adoption of the Independent Commission on December 15, 2006 Christian von Hammerstein was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . By 2006 the Treuhandanstalt had tracked down and secured 1.6 billion euros from party assets that had not been acquired according to the rule of law.

He was the initiator and first chairman of the Berlin Community Foundation . He was chairman and curator of the Berlin Club . Since the early 1970s he was honorary chairman of the Fortbildungswerk für Studenten und Schüler e. V. After its dissolution, Hammerstein initiated the re-establishment of the Association for the Promotion of Political Action in 1992 .
