Christianus Karsten (born March 20, 1810 in Enkhuizen , † July 24, 1884 in Amersfoort ) was a Dutch Old Catholic theologian and president of the Old Catholic seminary in Amersfoort.

Live and act

Christianus Karsten was a nephew of the Utrecht professor of philology Simon Karsten . He studied theology in Amersfoort and received in 1830 the sacrament of Holy Orders . After pastoral work in The Hague and Amersfoort, he became a lecturer in systematic theology at the seminary there in 1835 and, from 1854, its rector.

For almost half a century he taught theology at the Old Catholic seminary in Amersfoort. He was considered a proven connoisseur of Jansenism , Gallicanism and the history of Port-Royal and was in correspondence with like-minded people in France. Through his mediation, the seminary came to a considerable archive, mainly with letters and documents on the history of the dispute between the Jesuits and the Jansenists in France and Belgium in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Through him, the seminary also has oil paintings of people from Port-Royal.
