Christie Harris Illustrated Children's Literature Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Christie Harris Illustrated Children's Literature Prize is a Canadian literary prize that has existed since 2003 and is part of the BC Book Prizes . It is awarded annually in April to the best author and illustrator of the best illustrated children's book, picture story book and best illustrated non-fiction book.

The award is shared between the author and the illustrator. Awardees do not need to be Canadian citizens, but have to have lived in British Columbia , Canada , or the Yukon Territory for at least three of the past five years . The books can also have been published in other regions or countries. The award was announced in 2002 and was first awarded in 2003. A shortlist is published in March each year. A handful of the finalists, around 25 percent, are selected for another honor: participation in their reading trips, i.e. a one-week trip through the province to present their books in schools and in public libraries during April.

The award was established three months after the death of children's book writer Christie Harris . At the same time, it was the first new prize category since the establishment of the Sheila A. Egoff Children's Literature Prize in 1987, which was previously also intended to cover picture books.
