The Catholic Church of Christ the King is a church building in Frohnhausen , a district of Fröndenberg in the district of Unna ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) that characterizes the town. The parish vicarie belongs to the Fröndenberg Pastoral Association, in the Unna dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

History and architecture

The building was built in 1932 on the initiative of an entrepreneur based on plans by the architect and diocesan master builder Kurt Matern . The new building stands in Frohnhausen in a slightly elevated position above the Ruhr valley , between the villages of Frohnhausen and Warmen. The church is a rectangular hall with five bays , the chancel is kept narrower. Until the tower was built, the entrance side was dominated by a gable triangle with a small window. From 1948 to 1949 a tower was added to the entrance side according to plans by the architect Josef Ferber . The walls of the tower are divided by ogival sound openings and a larger round window, it is crowned with a tent roof. The design of the tower is based on that of the church building.

The retracted chancel and the nave are covered by arched light vaults, the ridge lines of which are clearly visible. The walls are structured by pointed arched windows and buttresses placed in front of them on the outside and thus take up a Gothic language of form with a factual statement. The sanctuary is lit from one side, it appears as a separate room.

After the Christkönig congregation has steadily shrunk in recent years, but the costs have increased, the church council asked the Archbishop of Paderborn to profanate the church. On November 24, 2015, Auxiliary Bishop Hubert Berenbrinker read out the certificate of profanation at a mass. The building is intended to serve sacred art in the future.

Furnishing

  • The expressive lead glass windows were made in 1932 by the glass artist G. Freeriks. They show depictions of Saints Agnes, Albertus Magnus , Elisabeth, Franziskus, Monika, Heinrich, Maria, Josef , Isidore and John the Baptist .
  • The sculpture of Christ the King standing gracefully on the cross is the central work of art created for the room. The work was made in 1937 by Walter Ditsch.
  • In 1973, the sculptor Herbert Lorenz created a new set of equipment out of wood, the parts of which are sculptured. There is an altar, the ambo , the tabernacle and a hanging cross.
