history

On March 25, 1446, the pastor of Matzdorf, Johannes, received a donation from the imperial notary Nicolaus von Frankenstein for the construction of a village church. The local landowner von Matzdorf supplied wood from his forest. The church was consecrated that same year. In 1532 the church was taken over by the evangelical community. This is how the third oldest evangelical parish in the Opole region came into being after Kreuzburg and Pitschen .

In 1696 the church was renewed and expanded, equipped with a baroque altar , with the figures of Saint John the Evangelist , Catherine of Alexandria , Florian von Lorch , John the Baptist , the prophet Moses and an unnamed nun .

The sermon pulpit was built in 1700. In 1851 the parapet around the altar was built with the inscription "1851, Gottlieb Szymaszczyk". The church tower, which collapsed during a thunderstorm in 1850, was not rebuilt. The lower part of the tower serves as an anteroom.

The church had three bells. During the Second World War , two bells were confiscated for war purposes. In 1996 the church received a new bell.

The figure of the beekeeper and priest Johann Dzierzon is associated with the church .
